About ILMA

Since 1948, the Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association (ILMA) has been the voice of member companies that produce more than a quarter of the automotive lubricants and three-quarters of the metalworking fluids in North America for customers who use their products to improve performance and increase efficiency.

A Thriving Lubricants Industry Means A Thriving American Economy!

Our members make specialized lubricants for everything from backhoes to bone screws. Their products keep planes in the air; cars on the road; and the machines in businesses, households and hospitals running efficiently. Without lubricants and metalworking fluids, North American businesses and manufacturing would grind to a halt.  Through our enforceable Code of Ethics, ILMA promotes integrity and quality in lubricant manufacturing and marketing.

Our top priority is providing the safest, highest-quality products to customers for industrial, transportation and household use. We support policies based on sound science, rigorous analysis and common sense that keep our customers, employees and communities safe, while protecting our business model — providing individual solutions for our customers' needs. ILMA also serves as a technical and educational resource to members, their customers and lawmakers.

For decades, our members' scientists have deepened the pool of research and enriched the technical and educational resources that inform our members, our industry and lawmakers.

Who Are Our Members?

ILMA members are bedrock companies, most are still privately owned, and many have been family-owned for generations; they help customers find custom solutions to their challenges. ILMA members don't drill or refine, but they often work with major refiners and distributors.

Manufacturing Members are independent lubricant companies that produce over 25 percent of all lubricants and 70 percent of the metalworking fluids and other specialty industrial lubricants sold in North America.

International Members
are independent companies manufacturing lubricants outside North America.

Supplier Member
companies that are key suppliers of the independent lubricant manufacturing industry.

Distributor Member
companies which market and manufacture lubricants, own and operate a lubricant storage facility and maintain a finished product inventory or utilize a toll blender to do so, but which do not meet Manufacturing Member criteria. For questions, please email us at [email protected].

A Voice Greater Than One

In an accelerating global market with little concern for proprietary boundaries, ILMA's singular voice for independent innovation and competition has never been more important!

  • ILMA is the principal voice for the industry before Congress, federal regulatory agencies and other industry groups.
  • We unite around issues such as a level financial playing field, smarter regulation, advancement of American manufacturing and the protection of our members' ability to compete with larger companies.
  • Our approach to public policy is persuasive but collaborative. We'd rather work with someone than against them.
  • Our recommendations improve laws on behalf of our members and make environmental and safety enhancements for our customers, employees and neighbors balanced with profit and competition.
